Biedermeier Fireplace Clock

Southern Germany
Pear tree
first half 19th c.

Dimensions: H x W x D: 55 x 38 x 19 cm

Description:
Interesting mantel clock from the Southern German Biedermeier period.

The two-part clock case is built on a stepped base construction. Below, flanked by pilasters with caryatid finials, we see the enamelled dial with Roman hours and Arabic quarter hours. The original, strongly curved glass pane is held by a finely crafted bezel.
The three winding holes in the dial are for the escapement as well as one for the hour strike and one for the quarter strike.
On the right side there is a cord for triggering the repetition of the striking mechanism.

Above the cornice-like top plate is a large roof finial. Framed in the pointed arch field we see here a face with movable eyes and mouth. The movement mechanism is triggered by the hour strike. Please have a look at the attached video.

The movement has a running time of approx. 36 hours. The hours and quarters are struck on two springs.

Condition:
Restored and very good condition of case and movement. The hinge and the spiral spring for the movement of the mouth and eyes were worn out by years of use and have been replaced. The movements work perfectly.
