Walnut, birch root
Biedermeier c. 1820
Dimensions: H x W x D: 151 x 106 x 54 cm
Description:
Writing furniture standing on claw feet made of solid walnut.
The front view consists of two large drawers in the lower section, the fold-down writing surface above and a flatter headboard. The clean walnut grain pattern running through the surface is discreetly interrupted by horizontally running root wood accents in the base as well as under and above the writing flap. Two set solid columns of solid and dark-stained birch root flank the secretary section. Black ebony key escutcheons provide subtle contrasts. The profiled cornice is made of solid wood in excellent quality.
When we open the writing flap, we see a ten-panel interior veneered in birch burl. Accents are set here by the ebonised pull knobs and columns.
The absolute highlight is the central, open compartment with a mirrored back, the ceiling of which forms a cross vault carved out of the solid wood. Beautiful!
