Mid-19th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 72–120 x 88 x 46 cm
Description:
An exceptional reading or bedside table from the mid-19th century, adjustable in both height and angle.
The base of the piece, mounted on castors, features an asymmetrically positioned column, allowing the table to be moved right up against the side of a bed or armchair without any intrusive leg structure getting in the way. The turned column serves as a support for a solid square timber, which can be adjusted in height and locked into place at various heights using a brass pin.
The tabletop is divided into two sections, with the wood grain running continuously across the entire surface. Whilst the right-hand half remains fixed in position, the left-hand half can be adjusted both in height and angle using two toothed rail systems.
Two removable bookends prevent papers from sliding off when the surface is tilted.
Interesting fact:
Tables such as this are primarily associated with English craftsmanship. In fact, however, this type of furniture became widespread throughout Europe during the 19th century. A very similar bedside table can be found, for example, in the catalogue of the Mainz-based furniture dealer Wilhelm Kimbel from 1835/1837. Comparable models were also available in France and Austria.
Owing to their versatility and adjustability, furniture of this kind was not only popular for use with armchairs or beds, but was also frequently used in libraries and studies.
Condition: Good, restored condition.
