Small Biedermeier Commode

North Germany
Mahogany
Biedermeier around 1830

Dimensions: H x W x D: 82 x 77 x 51 cm

Description:
Strictly cubist Biedermeier furniture with an unusual function.

When closed, we see a small half-cupboard with two doors at the bottom, two drawers above and a towering top panel.
The flat front is interrupted by doors and drawers, some of which are set in front and some recessed, typical of the period and region. The corner-edged feet are also typical of the period. The expressive Cuban mahogany is laid absolutely symmetrically and not only runs across the entire front of the furniture, but also continues the grain pattern on the top of the panel. Discreet ivory key plates provide colour contrasts.

The special feature of this piece of furniture can be seen when the top is opened.
There is a wide, open compartment at the back underneath the top. The top drawer contains small covered compartments as well as small drawers on the inside.

The chest of drawers was probably used to store needlework tools or, in combination with a mirror, to store make-up utensils.

The unusual lock on the top drawer is also worth mentioning. There is a hook lock on one side to lock the lid and a bolt lock on the other side to lock the drawer underneath.

Behind the doors is a removable or height-adjustable shelf with toothed rails.

Condition: Refurbished and in perfect condition. Shellac hand polish.

Price: This chest of drawers has already been sold. Comparable objects in terms of quality and age are priced at around 3000 to 4000.
