South Sweden
Birch
early 19th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 98 x 62 x 42 cm
Description:
Cubist, two-part piece of furniture standing on pointed legs.
Flamed birch veneered on softwood. The ebony strips inserted on the edges and the Louis XVI fittings in brass provide subtle contrasts.
In the lower section we see two wide drawers with a birch wood profile all around. Above this is the writing surface that folds down to the front, and behind it are four small drawers. Like a chest, the secretary section can be opened upwards, making another larger compartment usable.
Designed as escape or travel furniture, the upper part of the piece of furniture is removable and can be easily transported with the carrying handles attached to the outside.
This small chest is also beautifully crafted on the back and would be good to place on a table or other raised surface when travelling. A mobile desk in which all important documents, pens and papers could be conveniently transported and protected from unauthorised access with just one key.
On the back of the base there is an old adhesive label proving the transport from Mjölby to Linköping.
Extremely rare type of furniture and hard to find in this simple beauty.
Condition: Refinished, very good condition.
