Small antique cherry chest of drawers

Thuringia
Cherry
Biedermeier around 1840

Dimensions: H x W x D: 82 x 104 x 58 cm

Description:
A three-drawer chest of drawers standing on turned legs, featuring an exceptionally beautiful grain pattern. The cherry wood veneer is laid symmetrically, not only on the front but also on the sides and, particularly beautifully, on the top panel.

All corner joints, both on the drawers and between the cabinet sections, are neatly joined using dovetail joints. This can be clearly seen in the photograph showing the drawer pulled out, as well as in the shot of the underside of the chest of drawers.

Interesting facts:
Alongside walnut, cherry wood is one of the most popular native hardwoods. The reasons for this are simple: the wood has a beautiful, rich colour, is very easy to work with, and has always grown in the region. Its fine-grained surface is well suited to shellac finishes.

Cherry wood is an indispensable feature, particularly in antiques from the early Classical and Biedermeier periods. Whether used as solid wood or cut into veneer, cherry was extremely popular. During the Biedermeier period, entire interiors were crafted from cherry wood.

Condition:
Restored and hand-polished with shellac.
