Birch
Biedermeier around 1830
Dimensions: H x W x D: 132 x 108 x 57 cm
Description:
Rare small Biedermeier escritoire with cylinder lock.
Body and drawer fronts of solid birch, interior and top veneered in birch burl.
The piece of furniture stands on massive block feet and has three large drawers in the lower part.
When the writing surface is pulled out, the cylinder lock opens automatically to reveal the beautiful and unusual interior.
Here we see concavely curved wood veneered in birch burl, which delimits the interior to the outside. Next to them are three drawers, one above the other. The ebonised crosspieces contrast beautifully with the light birch burl veneer.
In the centre of the interior is the visual highlight of the secretary; a three-sided mirrored compartment with a neatly parquet floor and decorative solid columns in the corners. The front enclosure of the compartment is reminiscent of an archway. The upper parts of the lateral pilasters can be pulled out, thus unlocking the entire central compartment. Behind it are four small drawers. A really great secret compartment!
Above the interior, there is another wide drawer. The top is finished with a convex-concave curved section with a central head drawer.
Condition:
Finished piece of furniture. Shellac hand polish. All drawers and other mechanisms work perfectly. The locks work. There are traces of old worm damage. The piece of furniture has undergone woodworm treatment, there is definitely no active infestation.
Price: This secretary has already been sold. I have several cylinder secretaries in stock, some still unrestored. Please feel free to make a free search request.
