Biedermeier wall mirror with gilded cherubs against a blue background

Southern Germany
Cherry wood, plaster
c. 1830

Dimensions: H x W x D: 107 x 51 x 4 cm

Description:
A well-proportioned and extremely decorative wall mirror from the South German Biedermeier period of the first half of the 19th century.

The warm hue of the cherry wood, veneered over softwood, is contrasted by the accompanying black mouldings and the delicate, hand-painted scrollwork.
The main focus is on the semi-circular segments and the gilded putti within them, set against a light blue background. The group of figures, captured in a joyful pose, was cast in plaster together with the panel behind it, then coloured and mounted on the reverse using small blocks.
The mirror is also particularly collectable due to its original, very well-preserved mirror glass, which, although slightly tarnished around the edges, is still perfectly suitable for everyday use.

On the sturdy cardboard backing, which is framed together with the mirror glass and was presumably added during an earlier restoration, there are transport labels dating from around 1900 as well as a handwritten note from the owner in Schwabach script from the same period. The point of departure for the journey at that time is given as Turnitzstraße, i.e. the railway station in Ansbach.

Very good and entirely authentic, restored condition. Original mirror glass.
