Vase pendule with rams' heads

France
Bronze, enamel
Empire, early 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 40 x 21 x 12 cm

Description:
Antique mantel clock in the shape of an urn vase.

Clock standing on golden, finely chased round feet. The stylised lid cup is made of patinated bronze and stylishly decorated with applications of fire-gilded bronze.
A real highlight of the clock are the rams' heads on the left and right, which appear extremely three-dimensional thanks to a skilful interplay of bright and matt gilding. These so-called "tête de belier" are a typical design element of classicism.

The large enamelled dial forms the centre of the front view. On a white background, we see black Roman hour numerals, Arabic quarter hours and, in the lower area, the watchmaker's signature: "Mathieu à Rouen".
The finely crafted lily hands are in beautiful harmony with the fire-gilded bezel.

The heart of the clock is a typical French pendulum movement with a lock disc striking mechanism. It runs for eight days and is wound by means of a square key on the front of the dial.
The thread suspension, which is also typical of the period, is adjusted by a shaft on the back of the clock.
The clock strikes once on the half hour and the number of strikes corresponding to the time on the hour.

Condition:
Excellent condition of the movement. The movement has been completely disassembled and professionally cleaned from top to bottom.
The case is also in very nice condition with light rubbing of the patination in the area of the base.

Price: This clock has already been sold.

A clock of identical construction is illustrated in the specialist literature:
