Antique Precision Regulator, Grandfather Clock with Seconds Pendulum

Scotland
Mahogany, brass
first half 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 202 x 50 x 25 cm

Description:
Highly decorative and extremely well crafted seconds pendulum clock from the early 19th century.

Clockwork case made of solid and veneered mahogany wood standing on base plates with side windows for the clockwork and glazed doors for the pendulum and dial.

The heart of the clock is a seconds pendulum movement with a unique, very large yet filigree Graham escapement and very fine beat regulation. Extremely stable construction with thick brass plates, held together by eight heavy and decorative knurled nuts. The pendulum suspension mounted on the back of the case is machined from a single piece of solid brass. Incredible quality!
The gear train is filigree and clean-cut, with six legs in each of the individual gear wheels. Roller wheel with backstop.

The decorative, silver-plated solid brass dial has a typical regulator layout with a central minute hand and decentralised sub-dials for the seconds and hours. There are Arabic numerals for the minutes and seconds and Roman numerals for the hours. Slender steel hands.
Masterful and wonderfully precise signature, in which only the shading is actually engraved, similar to an inverted engraving. Marshall, Wishaw.
James Marshall and his workshop in Wishaw, Scotland, are documented from 1815-1853.

5 kg pendulum of very high quality workmanship with wooden pendulum rod set in brass sleeves. Polished pendulum bob with knurled nut on the underside to regulate the rate. Relatively light weight (approx. 1.6 kg) to drive the precisely crafted gear train. The pulley of the weight is also exceptionally large and excellently crafted.

Condition:
The case and movement are in excellent condition. The movement has been completely dismantled and cleaned from top to bottom. The lever pallets have been finely ground and polished. The clock runs absolutely reliably and accurately.

Price: 9000,-€
