Biedermeier bookcase with interesting decorative moulding

Southern Germany / Austria
Cherry tree
Biedermeier around 1825

Dimensions: H x W x D: 184 x 110 x 39 cm

Description:
Interesting display cabinet from the southern German or Austrian Biedermeier period around 1825.
The piece of furniture stands on block feet and has a wide drawer at the bottom, the upper and lower lines of which are continued on the sides to emphasise the plinth area.

The two glazed doors are particularly striking due to their unusual decorative mouldings. Two stylised snakes wind around a vertical arrow. The dark black of the ink painting creates a particularly effective contrast with the fabric stretched behind the glass panes.
In addition to this scrollwork, the panels in the lower section of the doors are also remarkable. Significantly narrower than the glazing above, they feature an unusual design solution with mitred framing. The deliberate use of the cherry wood grain emphasises this construction method.

In general, the lively and unusually varied grain pattern of the cherry wood is striking. This applies not only to the front of the furniture, but also to the large veneered sides.

The multi-profiled cornice is accentuated by an ebonised quarter panel.

Opening the doors, which are locked with a bar lock, reveals an interior divided into three shelves and two drawers.
The interesting grain pattern of the wood is also striking here. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that this is not the natural grain, but a beer glaze imitating the grain.
Although this coating no longer dates from the time when the furniture was made, but was probably created around the turn of the century around 1900, it is nevertheless an impressive indication of the long history of this piece of furniture. It was apparently restored over 120 years ago and refurbished in line with the taste of the time.
It is traces such as these that show us the exceptionally long life of these antiques. A piece of furniture that was made so incredibly long ago, has survived to this day and still shows us many traces of its 200-year-old past - this idea alone never ceases to amaze us.
But back to the facts: In some places, the original light green colour finish, with which the piece of furniture was probably originally delivered, is still visible under the beer glaze.

Condition:
Restored condition with a shellac hand polish. The interior was carefully cleaned and refreshed while retaining the beer glaze. The Wilhelminian style fittings found at the time of purchase, which presumably also originated from the refurbishment at that time, were removed and the key plates in the shape of coats of arms, which were modelled on the original condition, were added.
