Biedermeier around 1830

Dimensions: H x W x D: 163 x 106 x 56 cm

Description:
Dreamlike Biedermeier escritoire with exceptionally neatly laid grain and spectacular interior.

On display is a classic Biedermeier piece of writing furniture with three drawers at the bottom, the fold-down writing surface above and a further drawer at the top. The furniture is flanked by two solid columns.

Even when closed, the exceptionally high quality of the secretary becomes clear.
Thus we see a neatly symmetrically laid walnut veneer on the furniture front. The reflection of the grain is not only vertical, but also horizontal.
The perfect symmetry also continues on the sides.
You can see a great special feature in the photo showing the piece of furniture diagonally from the front. Here you will notice that the columns are also veneered in the sense of this reflection. The veneering of such small radii required extraordinary craftsmanship at the time the piece of furniture was made. It was achieved with a perfection that simply amazes.

The interior continues in spectacular fashion.
There are a total of six drawers veneered in maple burl at the top and bottom.
Another small drawer is designed as a staircase and leads the viewer's eye into the central open compartment, which resembles a theatre stage.
The round arches supported by columns are decorated with winged caryatids and friezes of vines and tendrils.
Inside the open compartment, the floor shows circular and floral ornamentation in an antique design language. On the back wall we see vestal virgins performing burnt offerings to the left and right of the mirror.

Interesting facts:
Typical of the Mainz and Palatinate region is the slightly convex area below the cornice and the segmental arch on the top drawer.

The exceptionally high quality of the veneer, the architectural design of the interior and above all the manner of ink painting and overprinting techniques strongly suggest that the piece of furniture was made in the workshop of the Mainz master cabinetmaker Wilhelm Kimbel.
