France
fire-gilt bronze
Empire around 1820
Dimensions: H x W x D: 44 x 29 x 12 cm
Description:
Pedestal standing on finely chiselled round feet with frieze of flowers and palmettes. Applied bas-reliefs show arrows, torch and laurel wreath.
As the main figure we see - in very beautiful bronze quality - Psyche with butterfly wings sitting in a relaxed pose on the clockwork case. She is dressed in a tunic, which smoothly envelops her body; the drapery suggests the lightness of the fabric. Her hair is elaborately pinned up. She holds an arrow in her hands and rests her right foot on a small stool.
To the right of the figure is a finely designed tripod on lion paws with fine friezes and appliqués. On top of it a small bowl. On top of the clock case we see a quiver and a laurel wreath. On the left, an arch leans against the case.
The case itself is ornately decorated with butterflies and acanthus vines surrounding the white enamelled dial.
Eight-day movement with thread suspension of the pendulum, château disc striking movement and Breguet hands.
