Very rare pendulum with ship's automaton

France
Bronze gilt and patinated
Charles X around 1840

Dimensions: Height: approx. 42 cm

Description:
Clockwork case of patinated bronze standing on fire-gilded feet decorated as mythical sea creatures.
The brown patina contrasts with the friezes, which are also fire-gilded, the appliqués on the sides and the bezel made of a row of shells.
The movement is a period-typical eight-day movement with a thread suspension and a chase disc striking mechanism. Silver-plated, gioché dial. Breguet hands.
The movement is stamped "PD".

Above the clock case we see a superstructure, also made of patinated bronze, representing the seabed with sedimentary rocks and fossils. In front of a suggested city backdrop made of gilded bronze, a sailing ship moves on the waves of the sea.
The movements are produced by an automaton hidden under the cloth. The automaton is wound up with a square key through a small opening in the "sedimentary rock". The intensity of the movement can be influenced by two screws attached to the back to mount the ship. The speed can be adjusted by changing the centre of gravity of the lever arm using a small lead weight. The automaton is switched on and off by means of a lever attached to the side of the clock case.
The automaton has two patent stamps "BREVETE" and "EUDE", as well as the stamp of the master "J.C. Cailly", which is proven around the year 1840 (Lit.: Brian Loomes - Watchmakers and Clockmakers Edition 2017 p. 129).

Condition:
Fully working movements of the clock and automaton. Case cleaned. The patination has probably been passed over before, the fire gilding is absolutely authentic and original. Sailboat and fabric renewed.

You can see how the automaton works by watching two videos below this text.

Price: This clock is already sold.
