Small Louis XV Commode, so called Commode Sauteuse

France (Paris)
Rosewood
around 1760

Dimensions: with marble top H x W x D: 85 x 80 x 46 cm

Description:
Two-tier piece of furniture standing on slightly flared legs. Due to the relatively long legs and the omission of a third drawer, the piece of furniture appears light and delicate.
The curve of the front legs continues upwards over the pilaster strips. The appliqués decorated with rocailles and C-sweeps emphasise and reinforce this curve.
The diagonally laid rosewood contrasts beautifully with the dark rosewood. The individual panels are separated from each other by maple thread inlays.
The loose grey marble top follows the shape of the body. There is an old shipping label on the back of the marble top.

The back and top of the body are made in frame and panel construction.
The stamped signature LARDIN and JME are on the front left.

Interesting facts:
André Antoine LARDIN was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held the title of master craftsman from 1 July 1750.

Lardin was a hard-working and skilled craftsman. After his death, a large stock of furniture was found in the cabinetmaker's house. The numerous works bearing his stamp that appear in trade and at public auctions confirm the abundance of his production.
Lardin worked for various furniture dealers and probably also for a private clientele. He initially ran his workshop in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the latter became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas.

In addition to furniture such as secretaries, desks and small tables, André Antoine Lardin produced a considerable number of chests of drawers: chests of drawers with straight bodies that corresponded to the formal language of the Louis XIV period, chests of drawers in the taste of the Régence period, curved Louis XV chests of drawers, transitional chests of drawers and straight Louis XVI chests of drawers.
All of this furniture is classic in form and decoration. They are well crafted and mostly veneered in rosewood or violet. Lardin worked with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting in the taste of the time. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as flowers, birds, trophies, urns or even landscapes appear less frequently.

The stamp JME stands for JURES MENUISIERS-EBENISTES and is proof of the master's guild affiliation.

A chest of drawers by LARDIN is in the collection of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris.
