Antique secretary with columns

Thuringia/Saxony
Birch
Biedermeier around 1830

Dimensions: H x W x D: 173 x 116 x 62 cm

Description:
Beautiful writing secretary with solid solid columns and a dreamlike interior. The light birch wood on the outside is subtly contrasted by plum wood and birch burl on the inside. The keyhole fittings and the artistically designed ionic capitals blend perfectly into the overall colour scheme.

The width of 116 cm is measured at the widest point in the cornice. The width of the corpus is approx. 105 cm.

The structure of the piece of furniture consists of three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above and another wide drawer at the top. The top is finished off with a toothed moulding with an attached angled roof. The stepped end above hides another large compartment that can only be opened by a secret mechanism.

The interior of the secretary has four drawers on the left and right, one above the other, veneered in burl wood with pull knobs made of bone.
The centre is formed by an optically double-winged door, flanked by solid columns and with a staircase in front. The staircase is part of a wide, optically three-divided drawer, which underlines the overall architectural impression of the piece of furniture on the outer sections with so-called masonry marquetry.

Also worth mentioning is the curved bottom drawer, which is locked by the downward closing lock of the middle drawer.

Both the choice of materials and the artistic design of the furniture suggest that the secretary was made in Thuringia, Saxony or Saxony-Anhalt.
The interior, which is strictly based on the prevailing architecture, the arched lower drawer and the massive solid columns resting on block feet are typical of the area. Fragments of a Reichsbahn shipping label affixed to the rear wall with the imprint Halle a. (of the Saale?) reinforce this tendency.

Perfect quality craftsmanship, harmonious overall appearance, good proportions.
