Biedermeier around 1820-1830

Dimensions:
H x W x D: 153 x 99 x 50 cm

Description:
Writing desk on pedestalled block feet.
Cherry veneered on softwood. Inlaid ebony keyhole fittings in the shape of a coat of arms.
Very strictly straight-lined front with three drawers at the bottom, the writing flap, a further drawer above and the recessed head drawer at the top.
When closed, we see a very harmonious and absolutely calm grain pattern, not only on the front but also on the sides.

The interestingly structured interior consists of a central door flanked by ebonised half-columns, four narrow and one wide drawer and two open compartments with round arches.
The two open compartments are removable and reveal two drawers hidden behind them.
At the very bottom, across the full width of the interior, there is a writing and work surface that can be pulled out and then opened.

The craftsmanship of this piece of furniture is outstanding. The photo with the open compartment pulled out clearly shows the neatly executed dovetail joint. The detailed photo of the back panel shows how individual components are joined together by means of so-called ridge mouldings.

Worth knowing:
The "secretary" type of furniture, as you see it here, enjoyed great popularity in the Biedermeier period. In the Baroque and Neoclassical periods, it was still predominantly roller and sloping flap secretaries that were built. The classic form of the standing secretary, also known as a writing cabinet, only emerged in the late 18th century.

Condition: In very good condition with hand polished shellac.

Price: 5000,- €.
