Biedermeier cylinder cabinet so called Seeländer

Schleswig-Holstein / Denmark
Mahogany
Biedermeier around 1820

Dimensions:
H x W x D: 226 cm x 121 cm x 59 cm

Description:
Three-piece piece of furniture in mahogany on oak veneer standing on pointed legs with wonderful inlays, so-called marquetry.

In the lower section we find three large drawers.
Above this, behind a cylinder lock, is the secretary compartment with a leather-covered writing surface that can be set up at an angle, with a drawer to the left and right of each. Above this we see a 12-piece interior, veneered in birch, mahogany and maple.

The interior is strictly oriented towards the prevailing architecture of the time. Thus, the central door is depicted as a double-leaf portal with staircase and flanking ebonised solid columns. The upper end of the portal is formed by a Schinkel roof surrounded by masonry marquetry.
To the left and right of the portal we find, each in a semi-circular arch segment, marquetry and ink-painted figures in the ancient Greek manner.
On the outside of the interior, we find three drawers arranged one above the other and one false drawer each. The geometrically veneered fronts are decorated with thread inlays and have handles made of bone.

When the cylinder lock is closed and the central flap of the top is opened, the piece of furniture can be used as a standing desk.
The fine marquetry is also continued in the interior of the standing desk.
Behind the central door, which opens by means of a secret mechanism, there are three further small drawers. Letter compartments and a leather-covered writing surface give the compartment an additional practical use.
To the left and right of the compartment we see large convex doors. Behind each is another drawer and two larger compartments.
Behind the upper door there is a hanging device for pens and other utensils.

An openwork gallery as well as an ornate staircase form the upper finish of the furniture.

Condition:
Excellent restored condition, shellac hand polish. All drawers run perfectly. All locks and mechanisms work, the keys are present.

Points of interest:
The "Seeländer" type of furniture can be found in the far north of Germany and in Denmark during the Biedermeier period.
It existed in different versions - as a simple cylinder secretary and as a cylinder secretary with an attachment. Not all top secretaries have a second secretary compartment that can be used as a standing desk; there are also simpler versions with a simple central door.
Seeland secretaries are usually made of oak and veneered with fine woods such as mahogany, ash, elm or birch.
The interiors of these pieces of furniture often contrast in colour with the rest of the furniture and are sometimes decorated with ornate marquetry.

Price: This wonderful piece of furniture is no longer available.
