Empire Fireplace Clock with Calendar

France
Mahogany
early 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 35 x 24 x 17 cm

Description:
Beautiful antique Empire mantel clock in mahogany case. So-called Pendule d'Audience.

On four round squeeze feet standing pedestal. On the base are two sphinxes which carry the actual clock case.
Between the sphinxes there is a window in the middle which allows a view of the pendulum. The window, like all the edges of the clock, is framed with a narrow strip of ebony.
Above the window we see a brass appliqué. A torch and quiver are depicted. Together with the sphinxes, they recall Napoleon's Egyptian campaigns.

The front view of the clock is dominated by the extraordinarily beautiful dial, which shows the date as well as the time. Behind the curved glass pane is the enamelled dial with black Roman hour numerals, Arabic 5-minute numerals and - especially beautiful - a red calendar to 31.
In the area between the two winding holes is the signature: Dubois à Orléans.
For the hours and minutes we see elaborately sawn and filed gilded hands. The date is indicated by a simple blued steel hand.

On the back, we open the watch case with a large door and see the heart of the watch - a clean eight-day movement with a lock disc striking mechanism. Particularly rare and otherwise found primarily on high-end precision clocks is the cutting edge suspension of the pendulum. This can be seen clearly in some of the attached photos.
The clock simply chimes on the half hour and the respective number on the hour. Bright and long bell sound.

Interesting facts:
When Napoleon Bonaparte successfully returned from his Egypt campaigns in 1801, a veritable Egyptomania broke out in France. Gilded caryatids and sphinxes dominated the pilasters and pilasters on secretaries, chests of drawers and other furniture. In combination with exotic mahogany, they were style-defining decorative elements of the Empire.
Furnishings of this style were also known as Retour d'Egypte.

Condition: Completely restored and excellent condition of the movement and the case.

Price: This clock is already sold.

Interesting information on the subject of blade suspension can be found in the technical literature:
