In Biedermeier furniture making, attention is paid to straight lines and a strictly cubist design style. Carefully selected and mirrored veneers now provide the design of the surface. Sparingly placed columns and recessed key plates made of ebony loosen up the flatness.

Birch wood was particularly popular in the Biedermeier period. In northern Germany, birch wood was used as veneer from 1800 onwards, and in Scandinavia it was also used as solid wood.

Spruce and fir wood is one of the domestic softwoods. It was used as solid wood for rural and simple furniture. For fine veneered furniture, the softwood served as a substrate for the applied veneer.

In the Biedermeier period, black ebony was used as a contrast to light woods such as cherry, birch or ash. It was used for key plates and thread inlays.

Mahogany has always been considered a very noble wood. This impression was reinforced in the Empire when the wood was combined with gilded bronzes.

Inlay is the term we use to describe work in which, unlike marquetry, material is taken out of a solid piece of wood. Then the inlays are inserted.

The festoon is one of the typical decorative elements of classicism. It is a garland-shaped decorative motif that is often decorated with flowers, leaves and fruits.
