Bourgogne (France)
Cherry tree, oil paint
Directoire around 1800
Dimensions: height: 84 cm, seat height 47 cm
Description:
Four country French chairs made of solid cherry wood.
Studded feet connected by cross braces, which contribute significantly to the design of the chairs, both at the front and at the back.
Very unusual back boards with four different figures from Greek mythology painted in oil paint.
Despite their provincial basic tendency, these four chairs have an exceptionally noble appearance.
The rather rustic solid cherry wood, for example, appears fine and elegant thanks to the elegant sweep in the back studs. The painting in the back board contrasts with the more rustic bracing of the chair frame.
Chairs like these are very rare to find. A set of chairs comparable in style (same basic form, also painting in the back board) is in the Musée Nicolas Rolin in Autun, France.
Condition:
Restored condition ready for living. Old patina. Former wickerwork replaced by upholstery.
Price: 2400,-€
