fire-gilt and patinated bronze
around 1830
Dimensions: H x W x D: 54 x 38 x 17 cm
Description:
Large fire-gilt pendulum depicting Apollo.
A base with a frieze on three sides and an applied bas-relief with laurel wreath, palmettes, spear and trumpets stands on lion paws.
The main figure is Apollo with lyre and torch - in very beautiful bronze quality. His tunic hangs over his shoulders and legs, his hair is tied up.
The depiction of the body is anatomically almost perfect - a tall young man, athletic but not too muscular. His gaze is clearly and confidently directed forward.
The craftsmanship of the bronze is outstanding. Details such as on the feet, the hair or the torch are finely chiselled. The different materialities are clearly visible through the finest hatchings as well as through the interplay of shiny and matt gilding.
Apollo sits in a natural setting on a patinated rock, which stands on a likewise patinated background.
The dial is surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac.
Eight-day movement with thread suspension of the pendulum, lock disc striking movement and Breguet hands.
Dial signed: Laguesse & Cie á Paris
Condition:
Authentic state of preservation of the gilding. New silvered dial.
Movement cleaned from scratch and absolutely reliable.
