Ladies Desk - Bonheur Du Jour

France
Rosewood, mahogany, maple, etc.
Mid 19th century

Dimensions: H x W x D: 92 x 67 x 43 cm

Description:
Rare and extremely quality-marked ladies desk in the style of Charles Topino from the French Historicism.

Between the four slightly curved legs standing in brass sabots is a pedestal tray which provides the necessary stability.
Recessed in the frame we see a drawer containing three further compartments, which are opened by sliding marketised and leather-covered panels.
The edge of the top is framed by a brass strip. On the back panel there is a top that holds further compartments and drawers.

The variety of figurative and landscape marquetry is impressive.
We see village scenes on the pedestal tray, on the plate and on the display side of the top. Farmsteads, mills and small castles are depicted against a rural, slightly hilly backdrop.
On the sides, back, and front of the drawer are objects such as vases, jugs, and writing utensils joined together in a fine marquetry technique.

Fun Facts:
In art history, the second half of the 19th century is known as "historicism". This means that people went back to old historical styles and made new furniture in the old style. In other words, furniture that was already antique at the time was taken as a model.
The model for the ladies' desk presented here was furniture by the Parisian ebenist Charles Topino (1735-1803), who was famous for his elaborate marquetry work.
Desks of this type were and are also known as Bonheur Du Jour, which literally means "happiness of the day".
